January 8, 2012

I’ve been feeling under the weather since yesterday. I was supposed to go out yesterday and today, but since I wasn’t feeling well, I didn’t go with them anymore. Chose to rest and stay at home instead of going out. Feeling much better now.

This (read: huge) pimple below my nose decided to come out! Grr. I want to pop it so bad, but I’m sure that I’m gonna regret it so I’m not touching it. I hope it disappears soon. It’s in the “pus is about to come out” stage so I’m pretty sure it’ll be gone after a few (I hope by tomorrow!!!) days. It’s disgusting to look at! Boohoo.

God really sends us people/signs when we least expect it. I was just telling a friend about how I don’t want to forget Spanish when suddenly, this Latin American acquaintance messages me. We talk for a while about random stuff and in the end, we’ve decided to go jogging when I come back from the Philippines (so that’s next next week). Yay, here’s to me exercising and hopefully conversing in Spanish (and making friends).

I thank my mom and UP (my education) for making me appreciate the value of doing research. Of course there are times when it’s tedious and it’s time-consuming and we get lazy to do research and we just want things to be spoon-fed to us, but we won’t really learn that way. We have to look for things on our own. Stop being dumb. This is just me ranting about some people who keep on asking questions when it only takes a minute (or even just a couple of seconds depending on your Internet speed) to know the answer. Pfft!

Today’s December 15 in the lunar calendar and apparently, that means eating ge bao 割包 (in Mandarin, and gua bao in Taiwanese). It’s this bun filled with pork belly, pickled mustard greens, cilantro, and crushed peanuts. Yum!

November 5, 2011

Hey big spenderrrr!

We had activities lined up for today as well. The day started with brunch, and then Richelle and I went to the Taipei International Convention Center to wait for Roxane and her friends. There was going to be a big balloon (I don’t know what to call it) around the area to celebrate Super Junior’s (this Korean boy band) 6th year anniversary, and since my cousins Richelle and Roxane are HUGE fans, we were going there to check it out.

It took a while for Roxane and her friends to arrive, so Richelle and I went into the TICC for the free air conditioning. LOL! Luckily, there were also 2 free entrance exhibits going on, so we were able to take a look around. We went to this jewelry exhibit, and this travel/school exhibit. We got a lot of brochures related to “must-see places” in different Taiwan cities (such as Taizhong, Taidong, etc.), which I could use to plan my future travels. Hihi.

Finally, we met up with Roxane and her friends and looked at the balloon thing. Can you guess how much that cost? It was made/bought (?) through fans’ donations, and it cost… *drum roll please* around 100, 000NT, I think! OMG I DO NOT KNOW HOW IT CAME TO BE THAT EXPENSIVE BUT I CANNOT BELIEVE IT. The money that they spent on that could have put to better use, in my opinion. Oh well, I guess I can’t fully understand how a fan’s mind works.

After looking at it and taking pictures, we went to Ximending to walk around. We cut our bangs, and then we passed by this Korean merchandise store where the store person was applying Super Junior manicures on people for free. Richelle and Roxane had the band members’ faces applied on their fingernails (4 for Richelle, and 2 for Roxane).

Around nighttime, we headed to Shida night market to take a look around. We ate at this Italian place called Dr. Pasta, which had unlimited salad, soup, bread, and drink. You only order a dish (you can choose from rice dishes or pasta) and that’s it. Then, we walked around (there were a LOT of people because it’s the weekend) and found the jeans store that Richelle was looking for. It’s called Q HOUSE and what’s good about it is that you can fit the pants (they have dressing rooms) and they can also alter it for you for free! That’s somewhat of a rarity in night markets. They also sell tops and belts. When we were done with Shida, we walked to Gongguan because riding the bus from there was cheaper than riding it from Shida (it’s only stop away but there’s already a rate change). When we got to Gongguan, we saw more stuff that we liked so we ended up buying more stuff! Haha, I ended the night having a long-sleeved top, denim shorts, jogging pants, and boots.

October 26, 2011

I just realized that it’s been a year (and a couple of days) since I first came to Taiwan and fell in love with the island. I first came here last October 13, 2010, and I left October 24, 2010. It was my first time traveling alone to another country. What I loved about that trip was how I was able to go to most of the places I set out to go to all by myself. Sure, there were times when I wish I could have someone with me. Someone to share my experiences with, as well as someone to take pictures of me. Anyway, I just can’t believe that time really passes by so quickly. Back then, I still had a sem left in senior year – I was to do my thesis, graduate, etc. Now, I’ve accomplished all that and more. Wow!

Today has been another good day for me. The day started with my friend giving me a wake-up call in the morning. I thought that he would stop after 1 call, but he was so persistent and he kept calling that I eventually forced myself to get up.

I bumped into 柏木 and 瑪麗雅 on the way up to class, and we were talking about something funny when we got out of the elevator that I was laughing before I entered the classroom. The teacher said that she knew I was already there because she heard my laugh. Hihi, oops!

We were answering some exercises on this grammatical structure, and my partner and I had the wrong answer. I apologized to him because I was the one who told him the answer (but really, he could have thought about the answer as well) and then the teacher jokingly said, “You gave him the wrong answer, huh!” to which I replied, “Oops!”

柏木, who was sitting beside me, then turned to me and said something along the lines of, “the smart Therese made a mistake?” to which I replied, “That’s because I’m sitting next to you!” It took a few minutes for my comeback to sink in, so when it finally did, he burst out laughing and everyone looked at him. We had to explain to the whole class. The teacher said to 柏木, “Look at how bad of an influence you are!” HAHAHA!

After class, I went with some of my classmates to this Malaysian restaurant (Bo Bo Cha Cha) in front of our school for lunch. I ordered the chicken with coconut rice (80NT), and it was delicious! It reminded me so much of Philippine cuisine because it came with kamatis (tomato), pipino (cucumber), and dilis (anchovy). These are some of the common Philippine side dishes as well. Yuuum!

Over lunch, one of our American classmates said to me, “If you tell me that you’re American, I would believe you!” referring to the fact that I can speak good English. Hihihi, I’m flattered. Although, he shouldn’t even be all that surprised anymore. Most Filipinos spend their academic lives in classes being taught in English. At least that’s how I was brought up. From grade school all the way to university, most of my classes were taught in English. The only exceptions were Filipino (language) classes, and other Philippine history classes. I can honestly say that there are a lot more Filipinos out there who can speak better English (better accent? LOL) than me.

When lunch was over, we rode the bus to go to Yongkang Street (永康街) to look for the snowflake ice (雪花冰) dessert place. There were 2 stores there, one was outdoors and the other indoors. We decided to go for the indoor one because it was drizzling a bit. We ordered the Fresh Fruit Mix Snowflake Ice Mango Flavor (超級綜合芒果雪花冰) and the Matcha Green Tea with Red Bean Snowflake Ice (宇治抹茶雪花冰). The former costs 150NT, and the latter 140NT. They were delicious! I love snowflake ice dessert! I still prefer the one I had over at Taizhong (台中) because it was sweeter (heh!) but this isn’t far behind.

We walked around for a bit after that, and then the boys left. I was left with the 2 girls, and we decided to go to Dante Coffee (丹提咖啡) to sit down and to kill time. Again, we talked about a lot of things while drinking our drinks. I ordered the Volcano (冰淇淋火山) which is coffee topped with vanilla ice cream! Yummy! 璱琦 ordered the Cafe Mocha (摩卡咖啡) and I don’t know what 瑪麗雅’s order is called. When we had finished killing time, we rode the bus and separated ways.

Day 24 – comidas y fútbol

Day 24 – comidas y fútbol

August 24, 2011

We had our presentation today! I was able to taste food from different countries. In turn, our classmates were also able to taste our Adobo and Bibingka. They loved it! :)

Nic and I watched Real Madrid vs. Galatasaray at the Santiago Bernabéu. It wasn’t as hyped as the FC Barcelona match of course, but at least we were able to watch a game live! :)

Day 23 – Clase de vino!

Day 23 – Clase de vino!

We had a very interesting culture class today. We learned about wine! :) we also got to taste a lot of wine (I was gonna write all about them but as of the moment, I don’t know where I placed my notebook so, details to follow!)

I just remember the last drink we drank (Pacharán) because it was very strong! I think it’s also made from anise. What Nic and I like the most is Calimocho (wine + cola) because wine by itself is something I’m not used to. :))

Pictures are from Nicole because my camera died!

Day 18-19!

Day 18-19!

The Cercanías was so full (because of the JMJ’s) that Nic and I decided to get off at Chamartin instead. I wanted to go to Plaza de Cibeles to see the Pope but based from previous encounters with JMJ people, I decided to just stay at home and watch the TV coverage!

On Friday, we had lunch at Ate Maite’s place! Tapas (bread topped with salmon and caramelized onions, bread topped with meat and brie cheese) and paella!! YUUUUM!!! :D

Day 16 – El Escorial!

Day 16 – El Escorial!

We toured the Monasterio de El Escorial. I liked it! It was very interesting! :) it was just sooo hot today and we felt like we were being burned! :( picture taking inside the building is not allowed, hence the shortage of pictures! Haha. At night, we went to the Metro Legazpi house (LOL!) for dinner! Yummy! :)

Day 12-14 – Córdoba!

Day 12-14 – Córdoba!

On Friday, we went to Banco Santander somewhere in Islas Filipinas, and then we rode the bus and got off in Callao.

Then, we went to Córdoba on Saturday. We saw the Mezquita-Catedral. It’s sooo beautiful! :) we also saw the Calle de las Flores and we ate at Patio Andalucía. Yummy!!! We were THIS close to being stranded in Córdoba because according to the lady, there weren’t any seats available in the bus. Turns out, there were still a lot of seats! Pffft! Whew!

On Sunday, Nicole and I went to the Rastro and then we went back to Aravaca for bbq and swimming. Then, we went to the fiesta in La Latina before going home! :) Real Madrid vs. FC Barcelona ended in a tie. Woohoooo!!! :D

Day 8!

Day 8!

Nic and I went to Moncloa (specifically Avenida Reyes Católicos) to “visit” AECID! Weeee! :) It was soooooooo hot!!! :(

Then, we went to Steffi’s apartment at Cuatro Caminos for dinner! She made German pancakes for us! First, we had pfannkuchen mit Gemüse (pancake with vegetables) and then we had the sweet version, made with vanilla something. We ate that topped with canela (cinnamon). YUUUUUM!

We also learned some basic German phrases!

Ich bin durstig. (I am thirsty.)

Wie heißen Sie? (What’s your name? – formal)
Wie heißt du? (What’s your name? – informal)

Ich heiße Therese. (My name is Therese.)

Hihihi.

We were so full afterward that we decided to walk around the area. We went to Parque Santander and then we reached Avenida las Filipinas where we saw Rizal’s statue! Nic was ECSTATIC!!! Hahahaha :D

Finally, we came back home to our apartment and Ate Maite invited us over to her place for some tapas! LOL! Jamón ibérico, queso, muslitos del mar, and pita wrap with smoked salmon cream cheese and lettuce. Yuuuuuuuuuum!!!

To eat

To eat

October23, 2011

I actually started this list when I was watching MasterChef. This was supposed to be a private entry, but I figured, why not just put it out there?

Here’s a list of the food I would like to eat “before I die”! Hahaha, this list is going to continuously grow, but at the same time, I hope a lot of items get crossed off too. Lemme know of more food I can try!

Pictures are taken from all over the Internet (mostly Wikipedia). Thank you.
